Western Range CV02 & CV03 Vaults

Structure overview:
Commissioned in 1972, the Western Range CV02 and CV03 vaults were constructed with reinforced concrete.
Scope of Works:
The project involved the removal of vault sections, each approximately 12.65m long and 8.8m high, with a wall thickness of 1.22m with the following provisions:
- The vault roof and walls to be removed up to 300mm above the tunnel base.
- Hydro demolition to be used to remove the final stub of the wall, preserving the reinforcement in the base slab.
- Complete concrete drilling/coring and scabbling in remaining vault structure for dowels.
Equipment deployed:
- 90t Excavator
- 50t Excavator
- 3 x rock breakers (5t units)
- Assortment of buckets and grabs
- 5 x Wire saws
- 3 x Core drills
- Robotic Hydro demolition unit
- 13t pump container
Operational Challenges:
Demolition works were completed during a major shutdown period. Managing the project within tight timeframes was critical, requiring coordination with and adaptation to the schedules of multiple contractors.
Working in remote, extreme temperatures created challenges for personnel and the equipment.
Project Highlights and Solutions:
This challenging and large-scale deconstruction project was successfully delivered on time with no safety incidents. The demolition was completed during 24-hour rotating operations.
