Wittenoom Townsite Demolition

Project Description:
The Wittenoom townsite lies within the Wittenoom Asbestos Management Area (WAMA), a 46,840-hectare region managed by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH). As the largest contaminated site in the Southern Hemisphere, WAMA is affected by widespread asbestos contamination from historical mining. Asbestos is a naturally occurring element in the Wittenoom landscape. Due to the presence of free asbestos fibres and associated health risks, all works must be carried out with strict safety and control measures to protect personnel operating within the area.
Scope of Works:
Thuroona Services engaged Mainline to demolish the existing townsite at Wittenoom, WA. The scope included:
- Application to WorkSafe for exemption
- Creation of cell for disposal of all demolition waste
- Demolition of all structures within site boundaries including residential and commercial
- Removal of debris
- Fill and capping of cell to Scope of Works specification
Equipment deployed:
- IT Loader
- Artic Dump Truck
- 50-tonne Excavator
- 35-tonne Excavator
All equipment cabs were fitted with Sy-Klone International RESPA® system with its 99.99% efficient HEPA RadialSHIELD® filter, maintaining cab pressure, and keeping the operators’ breathing zones safe.
